The Dogecoin Dilemma: When Nostalgia Meets the Harsh Math of Merged Mining

ChainCred Security

I first audited a merged mining setup back in 2017, during the TruthChain incident that taught me to never trust a rushed launch. Back then, the concept was elegant: share hashrate between chains to bootstrap security. Fast forward to 2026, and that same elegance is being questioned by a subset of Dogecoin’s community. The proposal to terminate Dogecoin’s merged mining with Litecoin has surfaced again, and this time, co-founder Billy Markus has publicly dismissed it as “pointless.” But as someone who has watched protocols sacrifice security for ideological purity, I cannot help but wonder: is this a moment of wisdom, or a dangerous comfort zone that hides deeper vulnerabilities?

Solitude is the only auditor that never sleeps. And this debate deserves a quiet, meticulous dissection.

Context: The Unspoken Alliance Dogecoin and Litecoin share more than a Scrypt-based hashing algorithm — they share a security blanket. Since 2014, merged mining has allowed Litecoin miners to simultaneously mine Dogecoin without additional computational cost. In return, Dogecoin inherits Litecoin’s vast hashrate, making a 51% attack prohibitively expensive. The arrangement has been a quiet success: Dogecoin’s network security today is far higher than its standalone mining reward would justify. According to data from DogeChain.info, roughly 90% of Dogecoin’s current hashrate comes from merged mining with Litecoin. Without it, Dogecoin’s hashrate would plummet to a fraction of its current level, potentially making the chain vulnerable to attacks costing as little as a few thousand dollars per hour.

The proposal to end this arrangement is not new. It dates back to 2021, when some community members argued that Dogecoin should stand on its own, free from Litecoin’s shadow. But the debate has resurfaced in 2026 amid broader discussions about network independence and the desire to differentiate Dogecoin as more than a meme coin. Billy Markus’s recent tweet — calling the idea “pointless” and urging the community to focus on “keeping things as they are” — has brought the issue back into the spotlight. Yet, as an INFJ analyst who has seen communities fracture over far less, I find this dismissal insufficient. It avoids the real questions: What is the cost of dependence? And what happens when Litecoin’s own incentives diverge?

Core: The Technical Reality of Security Fragility Code is law, but conscience is the interpreter. Let’s interpret the technical arithmetic.

From a purely mathematical standpoint, merged mining is a Pareto improvement for both chains. Litecoin miners receive extra block rewards (currently 10,000 DOGE per block) without extra energy expenditure. Dogecoin gets a hashrate that is roughly 300 TH/s (as of March 2026), of which only about 20 TH/s comes from dedicated Dogecoin miners. If merged mining were terminated, those 280 TH/s would vanish overnight. The remaining hashrate would be insufficient to guarantee transaction finality within reasonable time. The block interval would stretch from 1 minute to potentially 15 minutes or more, depending on difficulty adjustment dynamics. Worse, the cost to orchestrate a 51% attack would drop from millions of dollars to perhaps $50,000 — a sum accessible to a moderately funded malicious actor.

I recall a similar scenario in 2020 when a small PoW chain I audited (let’s call it “SparkNet”) decided to fork away from merged mining with Bitcoin Cash to assert its identity. Within a week, the chain suffered three reorganizations of over 20 blocks. The community panicked, and the token lost 70% of its value. The lesson is clear: security is not a feature you can toggle without consequences.

Yet, the contrarian in me must acknowledge that merged mining is not without its own risks. It creates a single point of failure: if Litecoin’s hashrate drops due to a market shock or a shift to ASIC-resistant algorithms, Dogecoin suffers collateral damage. Additionally, the lack of governance on Dogecoin means that even a benign change to Litecoin’s protocol — say, a soft fork that modifies the coinbase transaction structure — could break the compatibility layer, forcing an emergency fork on Dogecoin. This fragility is rarely discussed.

Contrarian: The Illusion of Eternal Consensus The loudest voice is rarely the most aligned. Billy Markus’s opposition may seem definitive, but Dogecoin has no formal governance. There is no elected council, no on-chain voting mechanism. The decision to maintain or terminate merged mining ultimately rests with miners and node operators. And miners, being rational actors, will act in their own economic interest. If Litecoin’s block reward halves again in 2027 (as per its schedule), the marginal benefit of mining Dogecoin may diminish. Some Litecoin miners might already be evaluating whether to redirect hashrate to other Scrypt coins or even to Bitcoin via merged mining with other networks. The moment Litecoin’s mining profitability drops below a certain threshold, the security blanket begins to fray, regardless of what a founder tweets.

This is the blind spot in the current narrative: stability is not the same as permanence. The “pointless” label assumes that the status quo is sustainable indefinitely. But in a sideways market, where capital and hashrate are sticky only until the next better opportunity, assuming eternal loyalty from Litecoin miners is naive.

Based on my experience auditing community-led projects, I have seen how emotional attachment to a setup can mask structural weaknesses. In 2022, during the FTX collapse, a DeFi protocol I advised refused to migrate from a centralized oracle because “it had always worked.” That refusal nearly caused a liquidation cascade when the oracle went down. The parallel here is uncomfortable: Dogecoin’s reliance on Litecoin’s hashrate is a similar single point of trust. It is not a decentralized security model; it is a symbiotic one. And symbiosis, while beautiful, is fragile.

Takeaway: The Quiet Audit Ahead The real risk is not that merged mining will be terminated tomorrow. It is that the conversation will remain frozen in a false binary — “keep it” or “end it” — while the underlying question of autonomous security remains unanswered. Dogecoin needs a long-term plan: either invest in its own ASIC mining ecosystem (unlikely given the meme coin economics), or formalize the merged mining relationship into a smart contract that guarantees certain service levels. The latter would require a change to Dogecoin’s codebase, which itself would need broad miner consensus.

Until then, the current arrangement is a comfortable illusion. Solitude is the only auditor that never sleeps. And in this sideways market, where chop is for positioning, the wise will watch the hashrate charts more closely than the founder’s tweets. Because when the security blanket finally slips, it will not announce itself with a tweet. It will simply leave the network exposed.
